Chapter 10
âIgnore him.â Angus says, watching as the others fade in the distance.
But Sampsonâs words still echo in my head.
âWhy didnât my father come for us himself?â I ask.
Angus shrugs. âA King cannot leave his kingdom. We are his loyal subjects, we do as he commands.â
âYet I have to demonstrate my power for everyone at the ball and he canât even be bothered to do anything himself.â Annoyance pricks at the back of my neck.
âSpeaking of the ball,â Angus brushes his fingers through his thick strands of hair. âShall we?â
Ugh, the last thing I want to do is be paraded through town as hopeful suitors present themselves to me.
Angus leads us through the palace and down towards the village. It is my first time back here since my first night in Ayond. Everything is brighter, sunshine cascading across the houses in a warm glow.
Five familiar faces stand in front of a meeting house of sorts, feigning sweet expressions as if they truly hope that Iâll pick them as my date for the evening.
âIs this really necessary?â I whisper to Angus, watching as any man and woman in their twenties stand at attention before bowing as I walk by, offering ti-leaf wrapped morsels, woven jewelry and trinkets carved from bone and wood.
âJust pick someone and be done with it.â He scoffs, eyeing everyone with a scowl.
âAny suggestions?â I ask. âSomeone not terrible or annoying?â
His lips curl, a faint smile. âNone come to mind.â
I chuckle, walking down the row of unfamiliar faces. The men hold my gaze while the women bat their eyelashes at me.
âWhat about him?â I ask, nodding towards a tall male with a kind face.
âNo.â He says, walking on by.
âWhy not?â
He stops to face me, incredulous expression on his hard face. âSeriously, that guy? Heâs a Grenade. You should at least pick someone with an ability that compliments yours. They are as much an escort for the evening as they are your guard. Pick someone who would last longer than a minute fighting by your side.â
âLike Sampson, you mean?â The thought of spending a night with the man that brought my mother here in the first place makes my stomach churn.
âSorry to disappoint, Princess. He doesnât play for your team.â Angus dons a sly smile.
âWhy is he standing here with the rest of them then?â I ask.
âRoyal orders. Your father wants you to pick whomever you want.â He shrugs.
âThis is ridiculous. They donât want me, I donât want them. Why canât I just go alone?â
I donât care about this ball. All I care about is showing my father I can control my ability and see my mother once and for all.
The thought of making idle chit chat with one of these villagers who is essentially being forced to stand by my side makes me want to spend the entire ball with my head under the covers.
âIt would be rather pathetic for you to attend your own ball alone, Princess.â He chaffs.
âAnd I suppose you have a date then?â I ask.
