Chapter 10

“Ignore him.” Angus says, watching as the others fade in the distance.

But Sampson’s words still echo in my head.

“Why didn’t my father come for us himself?” I ask.

Angus shrugs. “A King cannot leave his kingdom. We are his loyal subjects, we do as he commands.”

“Yet I have to demonstrate my power for everyone at the ball and he can’t even be bothered to do anything himself.” Annoyance pricks at the back of my neck.

“Speaking of the ball,” Angus brushes his fingers through his thick strands of hair. “Shall we?”

Ugh, the last thing I want to do is be paraded through town as hopeful suitors present themselves to me.

Angus leads us through the palace and down towards the village. It is my first time back here since my first night in Ayond. Everything is brighter, sunshine cascading across the houses in a warm glow.

Five familiar faces stand in front of a meeting house of sorts, feigning sweet expressions as if they truly hope that I’ll pick them as my date for the evening.

“Is this really necessary?” I whisper to Angus, watching as any man and woman in their twenties stand at attention before bowing as I walk by, offering ti-leaf wrapped morsels, woven jewelry and trinkets carved from bone and wood.

“Just pick someone and be done with it.” He scoffs, eyeing everyone with a scowl.

“Any suggestions?” I ask. “Someone not terrible or annoying?”

His lips curl, a faint smile. “None come to mind.”

I chuckle, walking down the row of unfamiliar faces. The men hold my gaze while the women bat their eyelashes at me.

“What about him?” I ask, nodding towards a tall male with a kind face.

“No.” He says, walking on by.

“Why not?”

He stops to face me, incredulous expression on his hard face. “Seriously, that guy? He’s a Grenade. You should at least pick someone with an ability that compliments yours. They are as much an escort for the evening as they are your guard. Pick someone who would last longer than a minute fighting by your side.”

“Like Sampson, you mean?” The thought of spending a night with the man that brought my mother here in the first place makes my stomach churn.

“Sorry to disappoint, Princess. He doesn’t play for your team.” Angus dons a sly smile.

“Why is he standing here with the rest of them then?” I ask.

“Royal orders. Your father wants you to pick whomever you want.” He shrugs.

“This is ridiculous. They don’t want me, I don’t want them. Why can’t I just go alone?”

I don’t care about this ball. All I care about is showing my father I can control my ability and see my mother once and for all.

The thought of making idle chit chat with one of these villagers who is essentially being forced to stand by my side makes me want to spend the entire ball with my head under the covers.

“It would be rather pathetic for you to attend your own ball alone, Princess.” He chaffs.

“And I suppose you have a date then?” I ask.
